What about Bali?
Bali is home to incredible natural wonders - from misty mountain forests to beautiful coral reefs! These special places provide clean air, fresh water, and homes for unique animals. Being "nature positive" means not just protecting these environments, but helping them get healthier over time.

What is Sustainability?
"Nature Positive" is a way of thinking and acting that helps nature grow and get better instead of harming it.

It means protecting animals, plants, and the environment, fixing areas that have been damaged, and making sure we don’t take more from nature than it can handle.

Colorful Coral: Underwater Cities

Bali's coral reefs are like underwater cities where thousands of sea creatures live! With more than 75% of the world's coral species, they're super diverse. In 2020, rising temperatures caused many corals to "bleach" and die. About half of Bali's reefs are still healthy!

What is Bali doing to help?

The Buleleng ICRG program trained six fishing villages to make underwater "coral gardens." They attach baby corals to special structures where they grow into new reefs!

On Nusa Penida island, each snorkeler and diver pays a small fee that goes directly to marine conservation. This money helps patrol the waters to stop illegal fishing.

Scientists are using the Mars Assisted Reef Restoration Method – a special technique that helps corals grow 50 times faster than normal!

Local dive shops take tourists to help clean trash from the reefs, and the collected plastic is recycled into souvenirs.

Forests and Trees

Bali's forests are like nature's treasure chests! They're filled with amazing plants and animals found nowhere else. These forests clean the air, provide water, and prevent floods.

Sadly, Bali has lost about 10,500 football fields of trees since 2001! New roads and resorts threaten even more forest areas.

What is being done?

The Social Forestry Program gives villages like Yeh Sumbul the right to protect their own forests! They watch over 210 hectares of trees and earn money from eco-friendly tourism instead of cutting trees down.

Local students and young people formed the BRASTI group to map all the plants and animals in their forest. They use this information to stop developers from building in important wildlife areas.

Tree-planting days bring communities together to restore damaged forests with native trees that provide fruit, medicine, and homes for animals.

Magical Mangroves

Mangroves are special trees that grow where land meets sea. Their twisty roots create underwater hideouts for baby fish. Mangroves protect the coast from big waves and store lots of carbon.

Benoa Bay, Bali's largest mangrove area, was saved from a massive $2 billion tourist resort in 2018! Now it's protected, though the new $80 million harbor project threatens these important trees.

Wana Segara Kertih Project

The "Wana Segara Kertih" fishing group runs an amazing mangrove nursery where they grow thousands of baby mangrove trees.

These fishermen become tour guides, taking visitors through mangrove forests on eco-friendly boats to see birds, crabs, and other wildlife.

Each tourist who joins a mangrove tour helps plant a new tree! This has restored large areas of damaged mangrove forest.

In 2018, the government declared Benoa Bay a protected conservation area after many Balinese people protested to save it.
