CLIMATE

What about ukraine?
Ukraine is a vast and diverse country filled with stunning landscapes, rich history, and unique traditions. From the towering Carpathian Mountains to the vast steppes, nature plays a big role in everyday life. But Ukraine is also facing big challenges from climate change. Let’s explore what’s happening and how people are working to help!
Back to UKRAINE!
What is Climate?
Climate is how Earth’s weather works over a long time, like keeping the air clean and stopping big problems like too much heat or storms.

Taking care of our climate means protecting our planet from getting too sick to support us and the animals that live here.

The Sea is Rising
What’s Ukraine Doing?

Building seawalls to protect the land from rising water.

Creating marine reserves to protect sea life.

Using more wind and solar power to slow down climate change.

Ukraine’s Black Sea and Sea of Azov coasts (Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Crimea) are slowly disappearing because of rising sea levels.

Whats happening?

Melting ice from the North Pole is making the sea get higher, flooding beaches and coastal towns.

Saltwater is mixing into freshwater, making it harder for people to find clean drinking water.

Coastal erosion is washing away land and damaging homes near the shore.

Rising Temperatures in Ukraine

Summers are getting longer and hotter! Ukraine is now 1.2°C warmer than it was 30 years ago, and it’s still rising.

Climate change is bringing extreme weather, from heatwaves to dangerous storms.

The Earth's climate is changing because too much pollution (greenhouse gases) is trapping heat in the atmosphere. Factories, cars, and burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas are making the planet warmer.

Whats happening?

Heatwaves are becoming longer and more intense, making it harder for people and animals to cope.
Crops like wheat, corn, and sunflowers struggle in the rising temperatures, threatening Ukraine’s farming industry.
Cities like Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv are seeing higher energy use as people rely more on air conditioning.

What Are they doing?

Planting more trees in cities to give shade.

Using green roofs and cool pavements to lower city temperatures.

Building better water systems to help farmers during dry times.

Heavy Rain and Floods

The Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine (Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia) get a lot of rain, and now it’s even more! Big rivers like the Dnipro are also flooding.

What’s Happening?

Too much rain falls at once, and water floods houses, roads, and farms.

Snow melts too fast in the mountains, filling rivers too quickly.

When trees are cut down, there’s nothing to soak up the rain, so floods get worse.

What Are they doing?

Planting trees to help the ground absorb water.

Building stronger riverbanks to stop water from flooding towns.

Creating flood alarms to warn people before the water gets too high.

Wildfires and Dry Lands

The dry lands in the south and east (Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk) are drying up. Forests in northern Ukraine (Chernihiv and Sumy) are also in danger.

What is happening?

Less rain and hotter summers = dry land that burns easily.

More wildfires are destroying forests and farms.

Smoke from fires makes the air dirty, which is bad for breathing.

What Are they doing?

Watching forests with satellites to catch fires early.

Training firefighters to stop wildfires fast.

Helping farmers keep their soil from drying out.

The War and the Weather

The war has damaged Ukraine’s environment the most in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv) and southern Ukraine (Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Mykolaiv). These areas have power plants, oil storage sites, and clean energy projects that have been destroyed by fighting.

What is happening?

Bombings and fires have released huge amounts of pollution into the air, rivers, and farmland.

Oil and gas leaks from damaged pipelines and refineries poison water and soil.

Nuclear power plants have been attacked, creating risks of dangerous radiation leaks.

Solar panels and wind turbines have been destroyed, making it harder for Ukraine to switch to clean energy.

Why is this a big problem?

kraine needs energy for homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. But how Ukraine makes energy affects climate change.

Before the war, Ukraine’s electricity came from:
Nuclear Power  – This was the largest source of energy.
Coal & Gas – These are fossil fuels that cause climate change.
Renewable Energy  – Wind and solar power were growing fast before the war!

But now, because many solar and wind farms were destroyed, Ukraine has to rely more on coal and gas, which causes more pollution.
