SUSTAINABILITY

What about canada?
Canada is working to become one of the world's most sustainable and fair countries! From fighting climate change to making sure everyone has enough food and a safe place to live, Canadians are working together to create a better future for everyone!

Lets go!
What is Sustainability?
Sustainability means making choices that help people, nature, and the planet stay healthy and strong, now and in the future.

The UN made special goals so everyone can make the world a better place!

Clean Energy Revolution

Canada is growing renewable energy (energy that doesn't run out) with wind and solar power! The country already gets about 68% of its electricity from clean sources like hydroelectric dams (electricity made from flowing water), wind turbines (big spinning machines that catch wind), and solar panels (panels that turn sunlight into electricity).

The government is spending billions of dollars to build new electricity paths, build offshore wind farms in the Atlantic Ocean, and help remote communities change from diesel generators (loud machines that burn fuel) to clean energy sources.

Housing Crisis - Making Sure Everyone Has a Home

Canada has a serious housing crisis - many families can't afford to buy or even rent homes. Young people are living with their parents longer because they can't afford their own place, and some families spend more than half their money just on housing costs!

what is being done?

The government has promised over $115 billion through the National Housing Strategy to create affordable housing. This includes building co-operative housing where families share ownership and costs, and removing taxes on new rental apartment buildings.

Some cities are building "tiny home villages" for people who don't have homes, and others are using robots and 3D printing to build homes faster and cheaper.

Fighting Hunger - Making Sure Everyone Has Enough Food

Even in wealthy Canada, many families struggle to afford healthy food. Over 1 million people rely on food banks (places that give free food) each year. Food costs much more in northern and remote communities - sometimes basic groceries can cost three times as much!

What Communities Are Doing

Food Banks Canada works with over 5,500 food banks and community organizations across the country. The government launched a National School Food Program that will feed 400,000 additional children at school every year!

Indigenous communities are creating "food forests" - sustainable spaces that provide healthy food while teaching traditional harvesting practices. Community gardens in cities help families grow their own fresh vegetables.

Local Treasures - Made in Canada

About 80% of things sold in Canadian shops come from other countries! But Canadian-made products are special - from cozy wool blankets to delicious maple syrup and beautiful Indigenous artwork. When you buy something made in Canada, you help support local families and reduce pollution from shipping!

Waste Challenges - Keeping Canada Clean

Canadians produce about 694 kg of waste per person each year - that's like throwing away about 7 full shopping carts per person every year! Canada generates about 35.6 million tonnes of solid waste each year, with only 16% of plastic waste being recycled (turned into new things instead of thrown away).

What Are they doing?

Many provinces have bottle deposit programs where you get money back for returning drink containers. Communities are organizing "zero waste" challenges where families try to reduce their garbage as much as possible. Schools teach kids about the "3 Rs" - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Did You Know? A single tree can absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide each year—enough to fill 12 beach balls!
