What about malaysia?
Malaysia is one of the world's most biodiverse countries! Its ancient rainforests are over 130 million years old - much older than the Amazon rainforest! Malaysia is home to incredible animals found nowhere else on Earth, beautiful coral reefs, and plant species that scientists are still discovering. Let's explore Malaysia's amazing natural treasures and learn how they're being protected!

What is Sustainability?
"Nature Positive" is a way of thinking and acting that helps nature grow and get better instead of harming it.

It means protecting animals, plants, and the environment, fixing areas that have been damaged, and making sure we don’t take more from nature than it can handle.

The Ancient Rainforests

Malaysia's rainforests are among the oldest in the world and are filled with incredible life! These forests have giant dipterocarp trees that tower over 60 meters (200 feet) tall, meat-eating pitcher plants, and the world's largest flower - the Rafflesia, which can grow up to one meter wide!

Whats happening?

Over 80% of Malaysian Borneo has been logged at some point. Large areas of rainforest have been cleared for palm oil plantations, logging, and development. This destroys homes for wildlife and releases carbon dioxide into the air, making climate change worse. When forests are broken into smaller pieces, it's harder for animals to find food and mates. Indigenous communities are losing their traditional lands and forest resources.

What is being done?

Conservation groups like WWF Malaysia and the Borneo Nature Foundation work to protect important forest areas. The Heart of Borneo program, started in 2007 by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, works to create protected areas and help forests stay healthy across Borneo. Tree planting projects are replanting native trees in damaged areas. Some forests have been given the highest protection to prevent logging. The Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project protects important rainforest in Sabah. Community programs work with indigenous peoples to protect forests while respecting their rights.

Forests and Trees

Long ago, Malta had forests covering much of the land, but now, less than 1% of the island is covered with trees.

One of the most important green areas is Buskett Gardens, a woodland planted by the Knights of Malta hundreds of years ago.

What’s Happening?

Most forests were cleared for farming, villages, and cities. Today, there are only a few green areas left, and they face threats from construction and pollution.

Climate change is making it harder for trees to grow because of rising temperatures and less rainfall.

What is being done?

Trees are being planted in old quarries and other spaces to create new green areas.

Buskett Gardens is being protected and cared for to make sure it remains a safe home for animals and plants.

Laws are in place to protect certain types of trees from being cut down.

Wetlands: Malta’s Hidden Treasures

Wetlands are places where water and land meet, like small ponds or salty marshes.

In Malta, wetlands like Għadira Nature Reserve and Is-Simar are small but full of life. These places are especially important for migrating birds that travel long distances between Europe and Africa.

Whats happening?

Wetlands are shrinking because of construction and pollution. When wetlands disappear, many animals, especially birds, lose their homes.

Birds that stop in Malta during migration, like flamingos and herons, are sometimes disturbed by hunting or trapping

What is being done?

Wetlands like Għadira and Is-Simar are protected as nature reserves. People work hard to keep them clean and safe for birds and plants.

Hunting laws have been introduced to protect birds that travel through Malta

Protected Areas in Malta

Malta has many areas that are protected to keep nature safe, like Natura 2000 sites and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

One of the most famous protected places is Comino, a small island with crystal-clear water and rare plants.

What’s Happening?

Tourism and construction can harm protected areas, like when plans to build a big hotel on Comino raised concerns about damaging its natural beauty.

Some Marine Protected Areas don’t have enough staff or resources to take care of them properly

What is being done?

Malta is protecting beaches, cliffs, and marine life by expanding MPAs and enforcing stricter rules against harmful activities.

Comino is being safeguarded to ensure its unique environment stays untouched.

A Home for Unique Wildlife!

Malta is a small island, but it’s home to some incredible animals and plants that are found nowhere else. Sadly, some of these species are endangered, which means they are at risk of disappearing forever.

Let’s explore Malta’s nature and learn about the amazing creatures that live here and how we can protect them!
